Greenery and cool environment of Kodagu (Coorg) district attracts more and more visitors every year. Rice beer has become popular in and around Kodagu. The Biligirirangan hills with forests for wild life, beauty of the river Cauvery, Bhagamandala the pilgrimage place, Abbey falls, Talakaveri the Cauvery’s birthplace and the very pleasant atmosphere makes the tour enjoyable. Mercara or Madikeri, Virarajendrapet (shortly Virajpet) and Mugilupete are some of the places in Kodagu where tourists stay.

Mugilupete or Madalapatti is a honeymoon spot. Lovers and newly married couple gather in large numbers at hills of Mugilupete. The thrilling atmosphere on the hills has made the lovers sing from their hearts. Kannada movies have been shot at this place. This hotspot comes within the limits of Pushpagiri conservative forest and very close to Somvarpet. It is at a distance of 22km from Mercara. It is on the way to Abbey falls. A 8 km travel on the straight road from near the turn that leads to Abbey falls. Jeeps and SUVs are best for traveling. Pay the fee of Rs. 200 at the check post before traveling towards the hills. Without paying the toll, view from the hilltop tower is not possible. There are no homes to stay or hotels for trekkers. Trekkers can camp at the bottom of the hill, taking permission from the government department. There is no place to stay on the hills. Better to take the food along while traveling. Hotels and travelers bungalow at Mercara and Somvarpet are the places to stay for visitors irrespective of any season.
Best time: morning to noon 12 O’ clock which is good for travel. Later it is too hot on the hills.

Trekkers and visitors from Bangalore have bus and train facilities up to Mysore. Take a taxi or bus towards Mercara and reach Mugilupete. Bangalore-Channapatna-Mandya-Mysore-Kushalnagar-Mercara is also possible. Jeeps are available at Mercara.
