Some senior citizens do not have the privilege of staying with their children or relatives. There may be several reasons for it. Many children who are infected with HIV are left alone with no one to look after them. Some of them may find it difficult to look after the mentally or physically handicapped persons. Day by day, the no. of people looking for old age and orphanage homes is growing in India because of the rapidly growing population.
First of all, make sure that these homes are good enough to stay for a long period of time. Inquire some one who stays in such homes or from their relatives who stay nearby.
This is an attempt to list all the orphanages, old age homes, Homes for HIV infected children, for women in distress, for the physically and mentally challenged people.
Planning to stay at Old Age Homes? Then read these points carefully and then decide.
- Find out whether it is affordable and really needed.
- If it is a secure enough place to stay and provides good facilities all the time.
- Before taking a decision ask about it with relatives and friends. They will be of great help.
- Find the right home to stay as it is necessary to stay for a long period. Take time to decide without making hurry to get into one of them.
- Look for a place where social, spiritual, physical, emotional needs are met.
- Personal visit to such homes and communicating with people will answer many of your questions.
- Staff & management may not show their true colors until you join. So beware of people who speak too much about their homes. Find out if they are really committed to give good service and are trust worthy.
- If there is place for enough privacy and freedom.
- Find out if communication with relatives and friends is allowed at the place.
- Avoid carrying any valuables to such homes.
- Read all documents, terms & conditions before paying.
- Have a clear picture of the payments to be done and whether the amount is refundable or not. Most of the time donations at such places are not refunded.
- Calculate the fixed and recurring costs before joining. Take receipts for whatever payment that has been done from time to time. Never miss out any copies of brochures, documents or papers signed. Keep them in a safe place.
- Keep the old age home well informed with the details of relatives or friends for emergency purposes.
- Keep an eye on the movement of people in and around the home. Complain to the seniors if there are any serious problems. Do not let them go Scott free.
